The characters ...Hi Bunnygirl, I liked this a lot. The characters were likeable, and the struggles came across through your details. I enjoyed the mix of the starvation struggle and the playfulness of the characters at the same time. It voiced sort of a continued hope. Nice job!

And yes, I was glad that dinner was several hours ago. My best food story was when I was on a mission trip in South America. The missionary went into a marshland barefoot with machete, chopped a caiman alligators head off and we brought him home & cooked him. Quite delicious. But the cooking is key. :-)WriterKathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01966875820095185649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25705418.post-83645909286037557722007-12-09T08:38:00.000-06:002007-12-09T08:38:00.000-06:00Yeah, there's dark and then there's ... uncooked.(...Yeah, there's dark and then there's ... uncooked.

(btw, I've had rattlesnake, too. Mashed up with cactus and stuffed inside a pierogi; does that count?)

I don't care if people did this. It's still icky. (Maybe I've been affected by the book about the rugby team stranded in the Andes who ate each other to stay alive?)Susan Helene Gottfriedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12778191943289129869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25705418.post-65952879144001637992007-12-08T21:01:00.000-06:002007-12-08T21:01:00.000-06:00Susan, LOL! Most of the "Will and Diana" stories ...Susan, LOL! Most of the "Will and Diana" stories have dark elements, as you know, and I've been wanting to do something along these lines for awhile.

But the specific choice of menu is based on a book I've been reading about the lives of young people captured by the Apaches and Comanches in post-Civil War Texas. Raw meat was a staple and many returned captives ate meat that way for the rest of their lives, although they did learn to add salt and pepper.

I could've made it worse. Among the Comanches, the stomach contents of a suckling calf were a particular delicacy. But I didn't particularly want to go there, and it's not the sort of thing that would've occurred to my characters.

As an aside, nopales (prickly pear cactus pads) are actually quite good. You can get them in a salad in some Mexican restaurants around here and buy them in supermarkets. They're not to Diana's taste, but many people like them quite well. :-)Ann (bunnygirl)https://www.blogger.com/profile/04938134750150653386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25705418.post-65456518208088079682007-12-08T17:25:00.000-06:002007-12-08T17:25:00.000-06:00I agree with Mao; Diana's meal would be more appet...I agree with Mao; Diana's meal would be more appetizing from the kitty point of view.

Of course, the shaking of a bag of Temptations will get my attention every time. *smile*

Excellent work on the story, Auntie Bunnygirl!

Purrs and snuggles from Marilyn.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25705418.post-19545225733172494792007-12-08T16:19:00.000-06:002007-12-08T16:19:00.000-06:00Wow, gritty and powerful story.
